Improving efficiency at the Goodwood racecourse operations centre

Goodwood Racecourse also known as Glorious Goodwood for its extraordinary natural beauty, has recently completed a full renovation of the Jockeys' Changing and Weighing Area, carried out by the Home and Industrial Heating Services Ltd.

This type of building is only used occasionally, typically for two days every two weeks. Therefore, use of the structure is limited but concentrated, with prolonged periods of inactivity between events. As a result, systems such as those for heating and domestic hot water must be designed to start up immediately and safely, even after long periods of inactivity. It is also essential to consider energy efficiency, fast activation and the prevention of health risks, such as Legionella, which can proliferate in unused water systems.

Technical data of the project
This project presented several design challenges, including:

  • Limited power supply
  • High domestic hot water requirements (12 showers, peak usage of 30 minutes)
  • Limited physical space for installation
  • Legionella safety
  • Building usage (typically 2 days every fortnight)

Lovato solutions installed
Our client Hamwic Technical Services designed the system to meet the customer's requirements, taking advantage of the innovations in the Lovato product range.

To overcome the problem of limited space in the boiler room and to provide zone control, the Lovato KOMPAT DN32 system was used, which manages two zones: one with variable temperature and climate compensation of the heating system and one with constant temperature for the domestic hot water system.

Thanks to the use of 2 T-FAST IE40 Pro Plus instant hot water generators,it was possible to provide Goodwood Estates with a unique solution to significantly reduce costs. The existing system stored hot water in a buffer tank, which was kept constantly heated by electric heating elements 24/7 for safety reasons related to Legionella. This need for continuous heating resulted in very high operating costs. The T-FAST system makes it possible for hot water to be supplied only when needed, thus allowing significant energy savings.

The system now operates at 65°C while continuing to produce hot water at 60°C. This represents a savings of around 20% compared to the original system, which operated at 80°C.

Legionella safety has been significantly improved thanks to the elimination of stored hot water and the guarantee of constant circulation.

The Goodwood Racecourse season opened on 1 and 2 May 2025, and the refurbished jockeys' changing and weighing area was a great success.
